Email hosting
Mailboxes and aliases on a domain you own, reachable with any IMAP client. Email is switched on per domain, not per mailbox, and every mailbox on that domain draws from one shared pool of storage.
What one domain gets you
| Included per domain | Amount |
|---|---|
| Storage, pooled across every mailbox on the domain | 10 GB |
| Outbound messages per month | 1,000 |
| Mailboxes and aliases | Not metered, see Limits |
| DKIM, SPF and DMARC records | Generated for you |
Storage and outbound messages above those amounts are billed by usage rather than blocked. The current prices are on the Email product page.
Already paying for web hosting?
A domain linked to one of your web hosting packages gets email at no extra charge. It becomes linked when you enter it while adding a site to the package, or when you pick the package under Web package on the domain's page. The Domain Settings tab then shows Included in hosting instead of a price, and there is nothing to activate.
If the domain already has paid email hosting at that point, the paid plan ends automatically once an active package takes over email for it. The unused days of the current period are refunded pro rata.
Where it is in the portal
Everything lives under Email in the dashboard, on five tabs:
- Mailboxes lists every address on every domain you own, and is where you create them
- Domain Settings activates email for a domain, and holds the catch-all and the traffic statistics
- Subdomains switches email on for names like
support.example.com - Delegates hands day-to-day mailbox administration to someone who is not a portal customer
- DNS & Setup shows the DNS records and whether each one is correct
Opening a single mailbox from the Mailboxes tab gives you its own page, with Overview, Filters, Vacation, Identities, App Passwords and Login History.
Ending email for a domain
To cancel paid email hosting, use Cancel under Packages. Email keeps running normally until the contract ends. See Term and cancellation for when that is. If a payment for it is overdue when you cancel, or becomes overdue before the contract ends, email is switched off within the hour instead. If you then pay the open invoice, email runs again until the contract ends.
To end email immediately, use the Domain Settings tab, below that domain's billing. Your mailboxes and stored email are kept.
What happens next depends on what you pay for:
- Paid email hosting: the current billing period is not refunded. That also holds if you already cancelled it under Packages: email then ends immediately instead of when the contract ends, and unused full months are not refunded either. You can activate it again at any time.
- Legacy plan: your free legacy rate ends permanently. Activating again later books paid email hosting at the price current at that time, so think this one through.
- Included in a hosting package: email has no contract of its own and there is nothing to cancel. As long as the package runs and the domain stays linked to it, email stays active. You cancel the package itself under Packages.
When email is switched off
Email only runs on a domain that has it booked or included in hosting. When that goes away, for example because cancelled email hosting ends, the domain's mailboxes, aliases and mailing lists are switched off. Your mailboxes and stored email are kept.
For a domain that gets its email from a hosting package, this happens in three cases:
- The package ends. After a cancellation under Packages, email keeps running until the contract ends and is switched off when the package ends. If a payment for the package is overdue when you cancel, or becomes overdue before the package ends, email is switched off within the hour instead, and comes back on if you pay the open invoice, until the package ends.
- You withdraw from the package. Email is switched off within the hour.
- You unlink the domain from the package. Email is switched off within the hour.
Email comes back on when you activate email hosting for the domain in the Domain Settings tab. If you link the domain to a running package again, email is switched back on by itself within the hour, or right away with Switch email on now in Domain Settings. If you ended email for the domain yourself, a new link does not switch it back on by itself: Domain Settings then shows Re-enable email, which costs nothing. Addresses you had switched off yourself before stay off.
While email is not active on a domain, you cannot create mailboxes, aliases, mailing lists, identities or email subdomains there, set up a catch-all, or re-activate addresses that were switched off.
What this is not
It is not a mail client. Read your mail in an IMAP client, not in the customer portal. The portal manages addresses; it does not show messages.
It is not a bulk sender. Sending is rate-limited per mailbox, and mass mailings and newsletters are not permitted under the service terms. See Limits.
